About Me
I'm currently working as a linux systems engineer at the University of Minnesota Health Sciences group developing and supporting research computing/hpc and web application environments within a HIPAA compliant space. I have over 15 years of information technology experience within institutions of higher education. Broad experiences with linux, systems automation, full-stack web development and support and documentation of processes. Bachelors of Science Degree in Management Information Systems from the University of Arizona.
Founder and Chief Developer of the Yin Yang House Chinese Medicine Community website, which has been active for over 20 years and has gone through many iterations related to growth of content and community engagement. Was a licensed acupuncturist and herbalist for two decades with large clinical practices. Masters of Acupuncture Degree in Chinese and Japanese Acupuncture from the New England School of Acupuncture (now part of the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences).
Work History
University of Minnesota | Linux Engineer | 2001 - Present
Linux system administrator within the Health Sciences Technology Infrastructure and Application Hosting team. Automation tooling with vSphere, satellite, chef, python and bash to support 100's of linux servers (redhat and ubuntu) within a HIPAA compliant environment. Develop and support hosting solutions for in-house developed web applications (primarily ruby on rails) and a range of 3rd party applications such as redcap - utilizing haproxy, apache and devops pipelines with git and jenkins.
Research computing development and support for bioinformatics processing pipelines - GPU cluster installation and management - slurm, apptainer/docker, python package management, and a variety of gpu/hpc related libraries.
Yin Yang House | Founder and Developer | 2006 - Present
Web Developer and DevOps Engineer for the Yin Yang House. Primary tools include python, django, postgreSQL, git, ansible and bash. Development and usage of lamp/lemp stack applications.
Built and managed multiple commercial office spaces, hired and managed multiple staff members, practitioners and developers (both in house and off-shore). Content contributor with over 20 years of clinical experience. Instructor for Yang style Tai Chi and a variety of forms of meditation.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology | Senior Systems Analyst | 2001 - 2006 & 1996 - 1997
Strategized, implemented, designed and/or maintained various, mostly high level, projects within MIT’s Academic Computing department. Examples are parallel computing clusters, windows domain development/management, automated deployment mechanisms, and educational/collaboration tools. Served as a consultant to various MIT departments helping them to utilize technologies within an educational technology framework, focusing on projects which utilize technology that largely fell outside of the general MIT support structure.
Upper tier support role devoted entirely to faculty usages of the MIT/Athena computing environment.
University of Arizona | Applications Systems Analyst and Network Admin | 2000 - 2001 & 1993 - 1995
Served as Webmaster and Systems Administrator for the Wildcat Online, Kamp Student Radio, TV3, Advertising and Production Systems and other on-line/networked functions of Arizona Student Media.
Analyst within the Workgroup and Network Consulting group which provided consulting, development and upper tier support for departmental networks across campus. Novell network administration, general mac and windows applications support. Installs and support for all associated hardware.
Governor's recognition award for an extensive project bringing large segments of university departments onto the internet.
University of California, Santa Cruz | Computing Coordinator | 1999 - 2000 & 1997
Supported the use of various technologies by the Faculty, Staff and Graduate Students of the departments under my supervision. This involves everything from hardware selection and setup to software installation, configuration and training.
Designed and implemented networked solutions for the Social Sciences Division.
Managed solaris servers to serve applications, provide enterprise-wide backups, web servers, and associated tasks.
University of San Francisco, School of Law | Network Administrator | 1997 - 1998
Managed various Windows and Unix servers as well as supporting and maintaining 150+ windows PC and Macintosh computers.
Assisted in the long-term development efforts with regards to the use of various educational technologies within both the Law School and the Law Library. Items included web-based delivery tools and enterprise-wide access for legal titles.
Michigan State University | Technical Support Specialist | 1989 - 1992
